Our Concertmaster

Daniel Rothenberg has enjoyed a multifaceted musical life for over 30 years. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Daniel’s early training at the Youth Performing Arts School and the Louisville Youth Orchestra—including a featured appearance with the ensemble on NPR’s From the Top—laid the foundation for a lifetime of dedicated performance.

Throughout his musical career, he has performed with a variety of collegiate and community ensembles. While completing his doctoral studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he was awarded an Emerson Scholarship, allowing him to maintain rigorous formal studies with Aleksandra Labinska (Boston University) and Jin-Kyung Joen (New England Conservatory). His leadership experience includes serving as the concertmaster of the MIT Symphony Orchestra under Adam Boyles and as a principal violinist in both the Harvard Dudley House and Cornell Symphony orchestras

An avid chamber musician, Daniel participated in MIT’s Chamber Music Society, where he was coached by Marcus Thompson and the Jupiter String Quartet. His musical interests extend beyond the classical stage; he is a skilled contemporary fingerstyle guitarist and previously managed and recorded with the upstate New York indie rock band, Coastjumper.

Daniel joined the Flatirons Community Orchestra in 2021, where he performs alongside his wife, Shene Randall. Professionally, Daniel is an accomplished climate scientist and meteorologist. Following roles at Google Research and Waymo, he co-founded Brightband in 2024, a Public Benefit Corporation focused on democratizing AI for weather and climate applications. Daniel lives in Erie with Shene and their daughter, Clara.
