Dr. J. Arturo Gonzalez was born in Mexico City, Mexico, where he had his initial music training as part of El Sistema in Mexico. Later he completed his bachelor’s degree in Orchestral Conducting and Piano performance at the prestigious National Conservatory of Music. Immediately after, he was offered a full scholarship to attend Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX where he finished his Master’s degree in Choral Conducting and Sacred Music. In 2011 he finished his Doctoral degree in Conducting at the University of Colorado-Boulder where he was the assistant conductor of the University Opera. In addition he has done master classes at the University of California, Westminster Choir College, University of St. Olaf, University of New Mexico, and the Early Music Festival in Daroca, Spain. His teachers and mentors include names like Nicolas Carthy, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Hector Guzman, Joseph Flumerfelt, Donald Neuen, Joan Conlon, Paul Salmunovich, and Anton Armstrong.
As music director and principal conductor he has directed the El Paso/Las Cruces Chamber orchestra, El Paso Association for the Performing Arts, Ballet/Theatre of the Border, and Colorado Light Opera. He is currently conductor of the Flatirons Symphony Orchestra. For two seasons and three national tours he had the tremendous honor of conducting the National Youth Orchestra of Mexico.
As guest conductor in Mexico, he has been invited several times with the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, National Youth Orchestra of Costa Rica, Carlos Chavez Youth Symphony (the main orchestra of El Sistema in Mexico), National Chamber orchestra of Mexico, Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato, Zacatecas Philharmonic, Cancun Chamber orchestra, National Conservatory of Music Opera Workshop, Opera of Guadalajara, the Orchestra of Xalapa (one of the oldest running orchestras in the Americas) and the philharmonic orchestra of the National University, which was recently reviewed by the London Times as one of the top 10 orchestras in Latin America. In 2016 he was invited in 6 different occasions to conduct the national symphony orchestra of Mexico. In the USA, he has guest conducted the orchestra of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Midwest Lyric Opera, Boulder Opera Company, Aurora Symphony, University City Orchestra, Longmont Symphony, Youth Orchestra of the Rockies, and the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra. Future engagements include conducting the National Symphony orchestra of Venezuela and his first conducting engagement in Europe with the Symphony orchestra of Avila in Spain, in addition to multiple appearances with Mexico’s national symphony orchestra, and the Orchestra of Mineria, Mexico’s top symphonic professional group.
